Onions-Nutritional Benefits

Speech translation

Hi everyone, in this episode of live better feel better I am going to speak about “Onions”. There are several varieties of onions. The onion I am having with me now is a brown coloured one. Additionally, there are white coloured onions, red coloured one, smaller sized onions and so on. Onions can be eaten in several ways -  they can be taken raw, they can be taken as a salad ingredient, as a pickle, they can be fried or roasted. Onions have many health benefits. To begin with, Onions have a significant proportion of vitamin C. So it provides us resistance to cold, cough and influenza. Onions are also good for the bones, particularly for women during and after menopause, when women tend to lose bone density. Onions can help prevent the loss of bone density at such a stage. In my personal experience, I have found that the small variety of onions (found in India and some other Asian countries) is an effective home remedy for dengue fever, when taken along with jaggery. The sulphides present in onions helps prevent heart diseases and various forms of cancer. Onions can be used as an ingredient in a very wide range of recipes. For some people, onions are a must, a compulsory ingredient, in any recipe they cook or make - not only for the health benefits of onions – they just cannot do without the tempting flavour of onions in their dishes, for example, onion fried rice.
