Chapati  (Chappathi or Flatbread)

DESCRIPTION

Learn how to make soft and tasty chappaties, the most popular traditional bread of India and Pakistan. At the same time also enjoy the health benefits of its wholemeal ingredient.

INGREDIENTS
METHOD
  • cup whole meal  flour

  • Little amount oil

  • Salt to taste

  • Luke warm water

  1. Add the whole meal flour and salt in a bowl and mix

  2. To this gradually add water. As water is added mix the whole meal flour mixture to form dough. The dough should not be too hard nor too wet.  It has to be soft and elastic.

  3. Add some oil to the dough (so it does not stick to the hands). Leave the dough aside for 1 hour.

  4. Take the dough in small pieces and roll them into small or medium sized balls.

  5. Take another plate and add some whole meal flour on it.

  6. Take a ball of dough and press it flat between your hands. Dip it into the dry whole meal flour and place on rolling board.

  7. Flatten the dough out using a rolling pin but do not flatten it too thin. You can spread a little dry whole meal flour as and when required to avoid the dough getting sticky.

  8. Turn on the stove and place a flat pan on the stove. Allow the pan to heat. Ensure that you set a heat at this stage and maintain the same level of heat throughout the procedure.

  9. Place the dough on the stove for a couple of minutes. When you notice the small puffs on the top, turn it upside down and heat the top side. Make sure both the sides have brown dots, then remove.

  10. Serve along any curry, gravy or chutney
